Right now, there’s an overwhelming burden in my heart to pray for someone that I’ve never met. Has that ever happened to you before? Actually, the person that I’m referring to has been held in captivity for greater than six months now. I try to pray for his release almost daily. I’m sure that many people don’t spend too much time focused on who has been captured in the world and where they are being held, but maybe there would be a little more humanity if people followed these kinds of things more. One thing I’m certain about in this situation is that no one is aware of the facts, which makes it incredibly hard to ascertain what exactly happened. Then again, the facts aren’t really anyone’s business unless they are immediately involved, now are they?

This brings me to another topic that I’ve visited before and I really have to say that for the most part, I don’t think that many Christian’s believe that gossip is a sin. Here’s what some people actually admit when questioned about gossip:

  •  It can be entertaining on some level
  •  It seems to help people feel like they are part of the group they’re with, when they having something “interesting” to contribute, even when it involves another person
  • It can be a form of a “stress relief”
Did you know that even if something you’re sharing about another human being is truthful, it still might not be appropriate for you to share. Here’s some good questions to ask yourself before going down a road that might be difficult to turn back from!
  • Even if what I’m going to say is the truth, is it constructive to share it with others
  • Is this uplifting
  • Could this be an encouragement for the person that I’m talking about
  • Might this be perceived as a private matter to the person that it involves
  • Are the questions that I’m asking “private” or “suggestive
In the first part of the post, I have admitted that I feel genuine concern and am broken over a dear person in Christ who is currently not free in an earthly sense. It would be so easy to try and share each and every detail that I’ve been privileged to, but in this case, I’ve elected to just give enough information that allows someone to pray without the specifics.
Now, is God a God of specifics! He surely is but what he isn’t, is a God of gossip. For now, it’s enough to know that someone needs our prayers because God hears. Honestly, trying to stay away from this topic is probably on the top ten most difficult things to do in the world! I think God would see it as a real win if inquiring minds were able to just pray and limit their inquisitions.
